West Midlands radio legend, Les Ross MBE selects his Inside Tracks on 101.8 WCR FM Having just celebrated his 60th birthday, West Midlands based radio broadcaster, Les Ross will be the guest on WCR's Inside Tracks programme tonight, Thursday, (March 19) between 7pm and 8pm. The programme will be repeated the following Wednesday at 9am During the programme, Les uses music to take us on the journey of his life. Born and raised in Bir-mingham, Les attended King Edward the Sixth Grammar School in Aston. His first job with IBM was followed by a stint with the Birmingham Parks department. Les developed a strong interest in radio when, in 1965, he entered himself into a disc jockey competition organised by Mecca and became the Disc Jockey Of The Year beating Johnnie Walker. Les moved into radio in 1970 with the launch of BBC Birmingham where he co-hosted the breakfast show with John Henry. In 1975, Les moved to Radio Tees as presenter of their breakfast show and then to back to Brum to Birmingham's BRMB to host their breakfast show. It was at BRMB for over 20 years that Les established himself as one of Birmingham's de-finitive radio personalities. Then, following some time at SAGA FM, Les came back to BBC local radio in Birmingham - which had been renamed BBC WM! In terms of awards he's got three Sony awards, a Top Breakfast Show award and the Variety Club Independent Radio Personality of the Year award, and an MBE for services to broadcasting. During the show Les talks about his enthusiasm for trains, indeed he's the proud owner of a 1966 Class 86 Locomotive! The show's host Pete Whitehouse explained: "Inside Tracks is WCRs' very own version of the famous desert island selection. In it, we ask people to select 10 tracks that take us on a journey through their life. Les's music list includes the first disc he played on radio and a track dedicated to his civil partner, Philip."
