Bus syndicate celebrates lottery win

Mar 17 2009

A Wolverhampton man is part of a busman's syndicate celebrating a £100,000 lottery windfall.

Thirteen bus workers in Travel West Midlands's depot in Oak Lane, West Bromwich, scooped £105,909 in the Lotto draw on Wednesday last week after matching five numbers plus the bonus ball.

They'd only been in it to win it for 13 months, before syndicate leader Harpreet Singh, aged 26, suggested they play the Wednesday draw and the move paid off, with each member now £8,146.85 richer.

Harpreet is planning to buy a new car and book a family holiday to Milan while other syndicate members have holidays, cars and home improvements high on their wish lists.

Other lucky busmen included Sarjit Singh, from Wolverhampton, Roy Smith, from Halesowen, John Guest, from Walsall, William Jones, from West Bromwich and, Phil Hay, also from West Bromwich.

Traffic controller Harpreet, a married dad, said: "I thought playing on a Wednesday would be worth it. I was working the early shift, which means getting into work at 3.30am, but before I left home I thought I'd quickly check the numbers on Teletext. I initially thought we had five numbers. I counted again and realised it was five plus the bonus ball."

He phoned the other members of the syndicate to tell them the good news but many weren't convinced.

Harpreet was forced to go to Dhesi Mini Market, Lodge Lane, in West Bromwich, where he bought the ticket, to double check the win.
