Meet the Mayoress - aged 16!

May 15 2007

By Gurdip Thandi, Birmingham Mail

Abigail Pitt

SHE may be just 16 - but youth hasn't stopped Abigail Pitt becoming the First Lady of her home town.

Abigail will become her town's youngest ever Mayoress when she is sworn in at a special ceremony later this month.

Walsall's new civic leader, dad Coun Melvin Pitt, will be unveiled at the Mayor making ceremony in Walsall's Council House next Monday.

And alonsgide him as the borough's Mayoress will be Abigail.

Last year, the Pool Hayes Community School pupil became Walsall's youngest ever deputy mayoress at just 15.

She is about to take her GCSE exams and wants to go to college in September to study A level drama and history.

Proud Abigail said she was looking forward to working to promote young people's projects and work during her year as the town's first lady.

She said: "When I became deputy Mayoress I said I wanted to highlight some of the great things that young people do and I want to continue that this year.

"We need to get more younger people involved with local issues that affect them. I'm very proud to be Mayoress and I'm looking forward to it."

Father-of-five Coun Pitt, 53, has served residents in Short Heath, Bentley and currently Bloxwich West for almost 20 years.

He said: "I know lots of great young people in the borough who help their communities and want the best for Walsall."
