Phew! This Cameron Mackintosh musical is steamy, sexy and bursting with lusty action and good music. And what a devilishly fine performance from Marti Pellow, playing the mysterious Daryl Van Horne, whose arrival in the sleepy New England town of Eastwick turns up the temperature for three bored housewives. The former Wet Wet Wet star is hot, hot, hot. His energetic encounters with Ria Jones (Alexandra Spoffard), Rebecca Thornhill (Sukie Rougemont) and Poppy Tierney (Jane Smart) leave little to the imagination, and the first night audience, dominated by women, loved it. The final scene of the first act, when Horne sends his three red-dressed conquests flying high above the stage singing I Wish I May, is simply stunning. Pellow is electric throughout, with sensual movements and contortions that would delight a trained gymnast, and the gorgeous 'witches' sing and act superbly, particularly in the closing number, Look at Me. This excellent show is based on the blockbuster film starring Jack Nicholson, and became a stage musical due to the intervention of Cameron Mackintosh and his writers John Dempsey and Dana Rowe. It's a triumph. |
